If Greek and Roman mythology were worshiped thousands of years ago, there must be a
significant reason it has stayed in our lives today. The essential question is concerning why this deceased religion
was never actually forgotten. Whether the ancient Greeks knew it or not, the heart of their stories was also the heart of
the story of human beings. Even thousands of years later, we can relate to the lives of these godly deities. In the story of
Aphrodite and Hephaestus, we see the classic, and still common, story of the beautiful woman marrying the geek.
This story along with countless others hit deep scenes in our lives in powerful ways. They are the foundation for the
way we think and live our lives.
Greek mythology represents how Greece and Rome have set the precedents for our government, sciences,
society, and culture. Our current form of government, democracy, was created by the Greeks, and the republic was created by the Romans. They were the first to present the idea of freedom of speech and citizen’s rights. Without them, there would be no foundation for the fight for freedom during the American Revolution. The Greeks first proposed theories about the solar system and the planets’ movements. Their mathematicians made the first accurate measurement of the circumference of the earth. Many symbols that are used in physics and mathematics are derived from the Greek alphabet. Our family traditions and the idea of “masculinity”were passed down from the Greek and Roman ways of life. Although these ancient civilizations are thousands of miles away and generally deceased, they greatly influenced western society without even knowing that it will exist.
